The purpose of Family Practice Note 2 (“FPN 2”) is to facilitate the filing of proper application documents, in a timely manner, in the appropriate Court venue, that provide only the evidence necessary to decide the issues.
After a process of consultation with the Bar, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta has made a number of significant changes to FPN 2. The new FPN 2 applies to all the same proceedings as the old Practice Note. It is located on the Court of Queen’s Bench webpage, at:

FPN 2 continues to be subject to Family Practice Note 1 (Parenting After Separation) and to the special requirements for self-represented litigants (“SRLs”) in each judicial centre (as set out in paragraphs 3 and 4 and Appendix A of the new FPN 2). The new FPN 2 will apply to applications filed on and after April 3, 2018.
Many changes have been made to FPN 2, including significant changes to filing deadlines, the process for scheduling applications, the number of affidavits, the scheduling of cross-applications, and filing requirements for third parties. Parties and Counsel are expected to familiarize themselves and comply with the new requirements and deadlines set out in the new FPN 2 before filing an application on or after April 3, 2018.
