Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Outbreak

Mar 12, 2020

Alberta is experiencing an increase in cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and it is anticipated that the virus will continue to spread. The Court is monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely, with a view to being prepared in the event of a disruption to court operations at court locations or a declaration by the provincial or federal governments that impacts our operations.

Public Health Recommendations
Members of the public and the profession are encouraged to follow the recommendations of Alberta Health Services. You should call 811 if you or anyone in your household is experiencing symptoms, or if you suspect that you have been in contact with someone who may have been exposed to the virus (ie. recently traveled to one of the countries identified in the Alberta Health Services information, or have been in close contact with a person with a confirmed or presumptive case of COVID-19).

Courthouses and Court Proceedings Are Open
Most court proceedings are open to members of the public to attend. However, members of the public who are ill should refrain from visiting the Court to protect the health of others by preventing the spread of illness, including COVID-19.

Court Appearances
Counsel are encouraged to stay in contact with their clients and any witnesses scheduled to come to court to ensure that they are healthy enough to attend. If there are any concerns, arrangements may need to be made and this should be addressed before the presiding Justice or Master in consultation with the other parties. Parties who are ill, in self-isolation or in quarantine may be able to attend a court hearing by telephone.

Jury Selections and Jury Trials
At this time, jury selections and jury trials are proceeding as scheduled. Members of the public who have received a jury summons must attend as required on the selection date identified in the summons. Jurors must attend trial as required. However, anyone who is ill, in self-isolation or in quarantine, should not attend, but should contact Resolution and Court Administration Services at 1.855.738.4747.

If the situation reaches the point where a reduction of court operations or other measures are necessary, the Court will post information on this website as soon as possible. Please continue to check this website for up-to-date information, as well as our Twitter feed, @QB_Alberta.
