Access to Justice
Albertans require meaningful access to the courts to resolve their legal issues fairly and effectively.
This includes the ability to understand and use the court system to resolve problems in a timely way through access to hearings and decisions within a reasonable period.
The Court of Appeal works to expand available tools and services to increase access to justice for Albertans.
Court of Appeal Management System
In 2020, the Court launched a digital case management system, CAMS. CAMS allows counsel and self-represented litigants to file documents electronically and access case materials without coming to the Court.
Registry staff
Trained Registry staff can provide legal information via email or phone, assisting litigants and the public from the time they start an appeal through to judgment and decision.
Case management officers
Case management officers (CMO) in Calgary and Edmonton manage the progress of all matters before the Court and decide various applications. These senior staff lawyers assist all litigants before the Court, providing general legal and procedural information. They issue formal administrative directions to expedite the progress of appeals.
