*To request an administrative direction from a CMO, submit a letter via CAMS.
Do not email documents to the CMOs
- All documents must be filed through CAMS, even if intended for the CMO.
- CMOs do not file documents; the Registry does.
Privacy questions
- Are required for every new appeal (or application for permission to appeal) and for every document.
- Answer the privacy questions carefully.
- Do not delegate this task.
- Remember: A publication ban is not an access restriction.
- Remember: Questions relate only to the specific document being submitted.
Orders and Judgments: Do not expand
- Include only what the Court actually ordered.
- Cost agreements are handled by filing a Bill of Costs.
Read all court communications
Withdrawing as counsel (civil)
- File an affidavit of service.
- Counsel stays on the record until 10 days after filing the affidavit of service.
- Include client email addresses.
- Permission is required to withdraw if appeal is already scheduled for hearing.
Attendance of in-custody clients (criminal)
Appeals
- If a notice of appeal indicates the client wishes to attend, no further steps are required.
- If attendance preferences change, notify the Registry at least two weeks in advance.
Applications
- In-custody clients are not entitled to attend unless ordered by a judge.
- Requests must be made early – as soon as the application is filed.
Formal order/judgment required
- Reasons for a decision and formal resulting order/judgment are different. A decision includes reasons for the outcome. A formal order/judgment includes only the outcome.
- Both are required before an appeal will be scheduled.
- If an appeal is scheduled without the formal resulting order/judgment, the panel may adjourn it.
Communications without notice are not allowed
- All letters and emails must show that a copy was sent to all other parties.
- If not, the letter will be rejected, and the email may not be answered.
- Do not write to individual judges unless expressly asked to do so.
