Covid-19 - Electronic Hearings Update

Oct 27, 2020

In the Notice to the Profession and Public issued on August 27, 2020, the Court of Appeal announced that it would use electronic hearings for all Court proceedings until at least November 1, 2020. The purpose of this Notice is to advise that, unless otherwise directed, all proceedings will continue to be heard electronically by videoconference until further notice. Requests to be heard by audio only (teleconference) or in writing only can be made by contacting the appropriate Registry.

  • Edmonton Matters: Edmonton.Registry@albertacourts.ca

Or by telephone:

  • Calgary Matters: 403-297-2206 (Fax: 403-297-5294)
  • Edmonton Matters: 780-422-2416 (Fax: 780-422-4127)

This decision to extend the use of electronic hearings until further notice has again been guided by the current public health status of the province, the continued need to minimize traffic to the courthouses, the benefits in making appellate courtrooms available for trial use, the importance of preserving the health and safety of all court participants and the benefit in assuring the future utility of, and access to, virtual hearings while, at the same time, ensuring continued access to the Court of Appeal during this pandemic.

The remainder of the Notice to the Profession and Public issued on August 27, 2020, continues to apply and is appended to this Notice for convenience.

When the Court decides to return to in-person hearings, reasonable notice will be provided.

Chief Justice of Alberta
