Lawyers with at least 10 years at the Bar can apply to become an
Alberta Applications Judge. Applications will be considered first by the
Applications Judge Interview Panel and if recommended, will be assessed
by the Judicial Council.
Candidates recommended for appointment by the Judicial Council are
placed on the final short list from which the Minister of Justice will
select candidates to fill this position.

Role Responsibilities
The Court of King’s Bench of Alberta and Alberta Justice welcome the
interest of qualified lawyers who wish to be considered for appointment
as a full-time Applications Judge.
Under the general direction of the Chief Justice and Associate Chief
Justices of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, the Applications Judge
is required to:
- preside in Chambers;
- preside in Bankruptcy Court as Registrar in Bankruptcy pursuant
to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act including taxation of accounts;
- hear applications within their jurisdiction as defined in Sections 9 though 11 of the Court of King’s Bench Act; and
- preside in matters requiring direction related to practice and procedure.
Applicants must be a Canadian citizen and a member in good standing
of the Law Society of Alberta; have extensive knowledge and familiarity
with the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, Rules of Court of Alberta and
applicable Provincial Statutes including Business Corporations Act, Maintenance Enforcement Act, Builder’s Lien Act, Law of Property Act, Civil Enforcement Act, and must have a minimum of 10 years legal experience. Fluency in French is considered an asset.
To be considered eligible, applicants must go through a screening
process and be recommended for appointment by the Judicial Council.
Applications will be considered on the basis of criteria such as
integrity, professional excellence, community and social awareness,
cultural sensitivity, and personal suitability.
Restrictions on Other Employment
The successful applicant, unless otherwise authorized by the
Lieutenant Governor in Council, will not be able to practice law or
carry on any other business, profession, trade or occupation.
Notes
The Court of King’s Bench is an inclusive employer. Applicants for
